Chipstead again bowed out of the Emirates FA Cup at the extra preliminary round stage, as Athletic Newham scored the two goals to see them progress to earn an away win & a trip to Lancing in the round
The home side under new manager Justin Fevrier started well enough, but spurned an early chance, as Peter Wedgeworth’s free-kick to the far post was just too long, after Emmanuel Robe had been fouled
Newham nearly took the lead, as their no. 7 glanced the ball off the crossbar, but Robe was quickly back in the action, getting to the byline, but his cutback could find no one at the back post - he then made another run, which led to Lee Quincey shooting over
Chips had to regroup, as Rory Da Costa had to go off injured, but they kept pushing, & Michael Dixon thought he’d scored, as he touched the ball goalwards, taking a knock in the process, but the assistant referee indicated that the ball hadn’t crossed the line, as the keeper pushed it away
The action continued from end to end - the Newham no. 9 hit a loose ball just wide, before Wedgeworth and Dixon combined down the left, but the cross was just over Quincey’s head
Newman were applying the pressure - an overhead kick from their no. 9 whistled past a post, their no. 11 had a shot comfortably held by Harvey Keogh in the home goal, their no. 7 crossed low from the byline, but it was turned wide by their no. 8
But their pressure told, as they took the lead 1-0 on 38 minutes, as their no. 10 fired home from the edge of the box - Wedgeworth saw another free-kick bounce awkwardly at the Newham keeper, but Chips still trailed at the break
Dixon had an early shot in the 2nd half, which went wide, & Chipstead began to introduce more subs to try to muster an equaliser - Keogh made a fine reflex save to tip a Newham shot over & keep his side in the tie, but the second goal arrived on 79 minutes, as Keogh again blocked another shot well, but couldn’t keep out the rebound from their sub no. 14
Newham also hit a post, as Chips pushed forward to get back into the game - Cameron Lewis-Brown’s deep cross from the right just eluded everyone in the box, before he soon fed Quincey , whose shot was defended
Keogh got down to prevent a third, but Newham held on to progress, while Chipstead turn their attention to the league
