Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup First Round - Wednesday 25th September 2024

Chipstead went out of the Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup at the first round stage, when they lost on penalties at Burnham after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes

With new signing Luke Cook leading the attack, they started brightly enough - Burnham hit a post, but Tequaniel Palmer put a long ball forward to Emmanuel Robe, whose shot was blocked for a corner - Elijah Hopwood took it, but the danger was cleared

Enrique Tiamuna then set up Cook, but his shot hit the Chipstead man on its way to goal! - Robe next made great strides into the home box, but couldn't beat the keeper low down

Chips took the lead on 37 minutes, as Hopwood got away down the left, before cutting the ball back to Cook, who fired home for 1-0

There was nearly a second, but Cook's shot was held by the keeper, before Chipstead keeper Jack West-Astuti had to get down well to deny the home side & preserve the lead at halftime

The heavens opened, as the second half began, but the 4G pitch held up ok - West-Astuti was quickly in action again to repel a Burnham attack, & they soon put another shot wide

Daniel Pappoe headed Hopwood's corner just over, after more good work from Robe down the right - skipper Robb Sheridan then made great progress through the middle of the park, before being upended - Hopwood took the free-kick, Pappoe headed the ball across the danger area, but no one was there to turn it home

Chipstead introduced their subs to try to see the game through, & Ismail Amiri shot over the target, after being teed up by sub Michael Dixon

The game turned on 87 minutes - Burnham were awarded a penalty for an alleged trip in the box, Chips' defender Richard Orlu was sent to the sin bin, but still showed dissent enough for the referee to send him off - the home no. 9 put away the spot-kick, & it was 1-1

As Chipstead sought a winner in normal time, a flick-on from Pappoe's long throw was put just wide

A penalty shootout followed, with the first nine being scored, until Cook's effort went over the bar, so it was Burnham who progress, while Chips had a blank Saturday ahead of them, before resuming league action at home to Corinthian-Casuals on Tuesday night
